Can You Answer These Questions About Job Searching?

questionsToday job searching is a job.  You need to know what to do for success.  But do you know why they are important?  Here are a few questions and answers to help you on your search.

  1.  What is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition)?
  2. Why do you need to be on Social Media?
  3. Why is Networking so valuable?
  4. Can I send the same Resume to every job I apply for?
  5. How do I ace the Interview?
  1. Your USP is what sets you apart from the other candidates for a job.  It is what you can do for the company that no one else can do such as a particular strength or an accomplishment that can add value to the company.   Knowing your USP will help you in writing your résumés and cover letters, and in interviews.  Be able to articulate your uniqueness on paper or orally comfortably and thoroughly, and you will impress recruiters.
  2. Social Media is a resource recruiters use to look for candidates, and job searchers use to learn about companies and their openings.  During the search for qualified candidates, recruiters will use social media to find people qualified for jobs and to find out more information about the candidates they are considering.  It has been said that if you aren’t on social media, you don’t exist.  Job searchers can learn about open positions; information about companies for interviews; and people to add to your network.
  3. Over 80% of all jobs are obtained through networking.  It used to be said that it isn’t what you know, it’s who you know.  It is still true today as it ever was.  Although there are many websites for posting jobs, getting out and away from your computer is the best way to connect with people who can open doors for you.  Networking isn’t a one way street.  It is about building a relationship with another person
  4. The short answer is no.  And the reason is that each job you apply for has nuances that aren’t found in other positions.  You must address each difference in your résumé.  These differences can include different responsibilities, requirements, skills or experiences.  Although the positions are the same, small differences can happen if they are in different industries.  Some companies require extra duties than others.
  5. Research, prepare, and practice.  Knowing about the company and the interviewer is vital in demonstrating to the interviewer that you want this job in this company and that you can do the job better than anyone else.  You should also be able to answer any question they ask.  You should know your strengths and weaknesses and what your goals are.  Companies are cautious when hiring because of the high cost, so they don’t want to make a mistake.  They need the right person the first time and the interview is one way to learn if the candidate is the right one.

I hope this has helped you understand why you do the things you do in order to get a job.  Hang in there your job search will be over soon.

The Biggest Mistakes Job Searchers Make

Step out of your comfort zone and find job search success.

Step out of your comfort zone and find job search success.

Some job searchers fail to move out of their comfort zone when looking for jobs.  This failure is killing their success.  The job search people undertake today is remarkably different from when they were looking for their first job.  For one thing,  they aren’t typing their résumé on typewriters.  And that’s only the beginning.

In order to succeed in the job search, they must break free of their misconceptions today’s job search. They may not like having to do things differently, but there is a whole new world of opportunity waiting for them.  Here are a few of the areas where they want to move out of their comfort zones.

Spending too much time online looking for jobs—currently it is estimated that over 80% of jobs are obtained through networking.  Spending hours on end on-line only leads to stress and frustration.  Reaching out to others and building relationships with people who can get you in front of hiring managers is a better use of their time.

Ignoring social media—it has been said that if you aren’t on LinkedIn, you don’t exist. Job searchers can be found by recruiters on LinkedIn and other social media.  Not only are recruiters looking for employees, they are posting jobs on social media.  Companies share their latest news on social media.  Job searchers using social media for company research find current news that they can use in an interview.

Using only one résumé—having and sending out only one resume is lost opportunity.  There are many such resumes in the black hole.  Each résumé should be tailored to the desired position so that it will turn up in a search in the company’s application tracking system.  A résumé containing the keywords from the posting has a better chance of being selected.  Sending the same resume for every position lacks the specific keywords used by each company.

Not knowing their unique selling proposition—a job searcher needs to know what makes them the perfect candidate for the job and how it will benefit the company.  The majority of the people applying have the skills and experience needed to do the job, but the successful job searcher is the one who has the unique ability to do it better than anyone else.

Not being proactive—job searchers who sit around waiting for jobs to come to them are going to be disappointed.  Today’s job search is about getting out and networking.  It’s about asking at the end of the interview what the next steps are and following up appropriately.

Job searching is a job in itself.  A job searcher needs to be always one step of the competition to know what companies are hiring, what types of jobs are available, and being able to go after the job with confidence.  Hours online won’t make that happen.  Nor will sitting and waiting for the phone to ring. Do what it takes to be successful.

Why You Can’t Job Search 24/7

Tulips need time to rest before they can bloom.

Tulips need time to rest before they can bloom.

I talk to many job searchers.  They all want the same thing a job ASAP.  Some work hard on their job search and then take some time to connect with family and friends.  They have projects to work on that make them feel they are accomplishing something during their job search.  Others think that if they stay on their computer all day, submit their résumé to every job opening they see and only think about their job search.

These two groups of people will eventually get a job.  But the people who take the time off are in better spirits than the ones who work on their job search exclusively.  Letting your job search dominate your life will only lead to frustration much quicker.  Everyone becomes stressed and frustrated in a job search, but you need to deal with these emotions.

Dealing with your job search emotions includes venting when needed, talking through your frustration while looking for solutions is  one way; socializing with positive people and taking time away to concentrate on other tasks two others.

Wayne Muller, in his book Sabbath:  Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives, says “if certain plant species, for example, do not lie dormant for winter, they will not bear fruit in the spring. If this continues for more than a season, the plant begins to die. If dormancy continues to be prevented, the entire species will die. A period of rest — in which nutrition and fertility most readily coalesce — is not simply a human psychological convenience; it is a spiritual and biological necessity. A lack of dormancy produces confusion and erosion in the life force.”

We are no different from the plants.  If we continue producing and producing without rest, we will start to die.  Yes, it can be a physical death due to the stress on the body.  But it, also, is a death of energy and positive attitude.  Working non-stop leads to despair.

Muller continues, “we, too, must have a period in which we lie fallow, and restore our souls. In Sabbath time,  we remember to celebrate what is beautiful and sacred; we light candles, sing songs, tell stories, eat, nap, and make      love. It is a time to let our work, our lands, our animals lie fallow, to be nourished and refreshed. Within this sanctuary, we become available to the insights and blessings of deep mindfulness that arise only in stillness and time. When we act from a place of deep rest, we are more capable of cultivating what the Buddhists would call right understanding, right action, and right effort. In a complex and unstable world, if we do not rest, if we do not surrender into some kind of Sabbath, how can we find our way, how can we hear the voices that tell us the right thing to do?”

Job searching needs you to be clear focused and energized.  Image going into an interview exhausted and not thinking clearly, what kind of answers are you going to give?  How will you look?  What will your attitude be?

Take time away from your job search for your health and sanity.  You deserve it.  And your job search deserves it.

YouTube for finding a job?

A dancing job posting.

A dancing job posting.

Ok, I have found the latest in job search strategies.  But before you adopt it, you have to quit your job.  But if you are out of work already, you will have to job search the usual way.

But you may want to look for your next job by watching YouTube.

How to Quit:   A young woman, Marina Shifrin, working for Next Media Animation, a Taiwanese company in Chicago, created a video for her boss.  It wasn’t your ordinary, run of the mill video.  Nor was it one of the videos she had created for her boss.

This one was a video where she did an interpretive dance to a Kanye West’s song called  “Gone” in a 1 minute, 45 second.  Marina had sacrificed her personal life for the job.  She had enough so she posted and “I Quit” video on YouTube that announced to her boss she was quitting.  An interesting approach to quitting, I must say.  I haven’t heard of that before.

It seems the video went viral.  Her colleagues at Next Media Animation responded by creating their own video.  Instead of saying “I Quit, they said they were hiring.   They showed the benefits of their company, including the roof top pool.

Marina’s viral YouTube video caught the eye of Queen Latifah who invited Marina to be on Queen Latifah’s daytime talk show.  During the course of the show, Queen Latifah offered Marina a job.  They were going to have a short interview after the show.  It is unknown whether Marina accepted the job or not.

But the good news for Marina is that she didn’t need a résumé, she didn’t go to any networking events, and her interview was brief.  Yet she landed a job working on a TV show.

The take-away from this is you don’t need to do much job searching if you quit your job by a YouTube video and go on a daytime talk show.  Doesn’t too difficult to me.  But if you would rather use the résumé you have spent hours crafting, or networking until you feel you can’t shake another hand; or spending days online looking for open positions then go for it.

But you might want to look at YouTube videos to see what companies are hiring.  Especially companies with roof top pools.  I just wonder how you would work that into your resume.

You have to admit it is a unique way get a job. And I only offer this to provide a bit of humor in your job search.

Unique Ways to Get a Job

thinking cap

The people in this blog are real, and their stories are true.  Both were unemployed for longer than they wanted to be.  They both put their thinking caps on and came up with a solution to their job search dilemma.

Rocky was working the computer field when his job was sent over to India.  The company wasn’t using the most up to date technologies so when Rocky was let go he had over 15 years of experience old technology.

When he realized that his skills weren’t in demand today, he took courses in languages currently in use.  It wasn’t easy to go back to school after all these years, but both he and his wife were unemployed and supporting two teenagers.  Rocky succeeded in learning new languages but didn’t have experience using the new skills.

He applied to every job he found online but without success.  Finally, he took his local phone book and went through the yellow pages and looked at every entry.  He selected companies that could use the skills he had.  Rocky created a cold call letter and resume that he sent to his selected companies.  Although he didn’t get many calls, he did get the ONE he needed.

One company called him for an interview.  There wasn’t a job for Rocky at the time, but after talking to the head of the company about what had to offer the company, one was created for him.  He is still working there a year later.

Eve is a draftsman with CAD experience.  Eve has worked in the drafting field for over 25 years and had been laid off periodically.  It seems she was hired without benefits, but they would be given to her after a few years.  Just as she reached the benefit stage, Eve would be laid off.  However, she was always able to get another job quickly.

This time was different.  Instead of getting a job quickly, Eve was out of work for about a year.  With her unemployment benefits running out, she had to take a bold step.  She sent an email to EVERYONE in her contact list explaining that she was out of work; needed a job soon; and listed her qualifications.  The emails went out in batches of a limited number of contacts.  The reason was that she wanted to keep the number of replies manageable.

Eve sent out her emails and received replies that ranged from didn’t know anything to will keep you in mind.  There wasn’t one person on her contact list that could offer her a job.  But one of her contacts had a neighbor who could.  Eve met with the neighbor’s contact and was offered a job.  It’s been two years, and she is working at that company.

There is plenty of advice on how to get a job, but sometimes you have to use your head and come up with unique ways to get a job.  Rocky and Eve did the unexpected to get a job.  They didn’t have a gorilla deliver a singing resume or anything crazy.  They used resources that everyone has available to them and took the time to create a cold call message.  What ways can you think of to get a job?
